Fall Advising & Orientation 2017 Schedule

(Subject to change - please check back for updated information.)

Fall Advising & Orientation schedule is designed to provide a complementary experience to the Summerstart experience. While Fall Advising & Orientation does not specifically replicate the Summerstart schedule, there is intentional planning to repeat a number of key sessions and opportunities in the fall to support your start at Western.

The Fall Advising & Orientation program has three key components.

1. New Student Orientation and Family Orientation on Sunday, September 24th (OPTIONAL)

The Sunday Orientation program kicks off with a casual lunch buffet, followed by a Welcome Session. After the Welcome, students will attend orientation sessions in smaller groups, and families will attend a parent/family orientation called Tips for Families. The student orientation and family orientation sessions are designed to support connecting with peers and university staff, and learn more about academic, social and personal resources on campus and in the Bellingham community.

There is NO cost for STUDENTS to attend the Sunday Orientation program (cost is covered by your Enrollment Fee); there is a $15 fee for each FAMILY MEMBER to attend (covers cost of the lunch, program and materials). Payment for Family Orientation must be made in advance by Friday, September 15.

  • 10:30am – 12:30pm: Check–in for Student & Family Lunch & Orientation, Vendor's Row at the entrance to the Viking Union
  • 11:00am – 12:30pm: Buffet Lunch, Viking Union Multipurpose Room (must check-in on Vendor' Row to receive meal ticket!)
  • 12:45pm: Welcome Session for Students & Family, Performing Arts Center (PAC) Mainstage
  • 1:30pm – 3:30pm: Student Orientation Sessions & Family Orientation Session (“Tips for Families”)

If you have signed up your Family member(s) when you made your reservation, we will plan for all of you to attend the lunch, Welcome session, and Orientation sessions. An invoice for payment for any Family Orientation fees will be sent to your WWU student email address in late August! If your family members have decided not to attend, please contact the New Student Services/Family Outreach office by Friday, September 15th, so we may update your record and not erroneously bill you or expect payment!

REFUNDS - PLEASE NOTE: As we are obliged to cover costs for dining, materials and other costs associated with family orientation, refunds are not available after the Fall Advising & Orientation reservation deadline, 12:00pm (noon) on Monday, September 18. Please contact the NSSFO office if you have any questions.

Please check back on our Schedule section of the Fall Advising & Orientation website for updates on event times and locations.

2. Academic Advising & Class Registration / Program Check-in on Monday, September 25th (REQUIRED)

Whether or not you participate in Sunday's orientation program ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AN OFFICIAL CHECK-IN ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 to receive your assigned time and location for academic advising and class registration, and receive additional advising materials to complete your advising and registration process.

  • REQUIRED CHECK-IN: 7:00am – 9:00am for Academic Advising & Class Registration, Red Square

3. Workshops & Tours / Western Welcome Week Sessions (OPTIONAL)

A wide variety of informational workshops, presentations about student services, and tours are also offered the Monday and Tuesday prior to the start of classes. Students will receive a Western Welcome Week schedule that highlights many of the same themes of workshops and sessions that happened at Summerstart, including presentations by the Student Business Office, personal finance planning, tours of the Library and Learning Commons, tours of campus, and study skills workshops.

The online Western Welcome Week schedule will get updated in late August.
