Service Learning

Service-Learning is an experiential learning method that combines academic instruction with community-based learning by connecting learning objectives to service objectives. It enhances student learning and civic awareness through "hands-on," community-based learning connected to relevant classroom and co-curricular experiences. Service-Learning teaching is a pedagogy that combines academic learning with community-based learning. It links theory with practice while addressing important community issues.
In other words, Service-Learning is a way to connect what you are doing in the classroom with work outside the classroom. Rather than going to class and then heading to work, where often little of what you learn in either experience relates to the other, service-learning ensures your experiences are related to maximize learning. However, don’t expect to get paid. When you participate in service-learning you volunteer your efforts to your community. Looks great on a resume though!
